In America, we love our contact sports with an almost unparalleled ferocity and fervor of a religious zealot—football, rugby, lacrosse, heck, even hockey. One contact sport that gets less than its fair share of coverage despite its lengthy history and solid, rabid fan base is the severely competitive roller derby. Popular even since the 1880s and having undergone varying degrees of makeovers, the roller derby in the 21st century remains a pastime that simmers the hungry blood of many with its gritty combative spirit. Some glory in the grueling endurance characterized by the entertainment sport, while others like them some of those tough and sexy costumes participants are known to don like battle armor before hitting the tracks. And regrettably, some sad saps fall under the deprived category of the uninitiated.
Well, there’s no use crying over spilt milk and no time like the present to get yourself acquainted with this war on wheels if you’ve been so deprived. Come February 19th this 2011 the Angel City Derby Girls proudly presents Roller Derby!! at the Culver City Veterans Memorial Auditorium! Doors open at 7 PM for the sporting event no fan of hair-raising, head-to-head competition would miss as the Hollywood Scarlets take on the Sac City Rollers in a fight to the finish. Blood, sweat, and tears will follow as roller skates tear up the track amid a flurry of saucy outfits. By the time you leave, dedication, roller-skating and empowerment will take on a whole new meaning. Be prepared for a serious dose of adrenaline on wheels.
